Disputes Tribunal Maximum Claim Doubles
On 24 January 2026, the financial jurisdiction of the Disputes Tribunal increased from $30,000.00 to $60,000.00. Effectively doubling the maximum claim. This is a significant change for individuals and businesses across the wider Central Otago region. A new filing fee of $468.00 applies to claims ranging between $30,001.00 and $60,000.00.
The change is intended to improve access to justice by making it easier and more affordable to resolve disputes. In practical terms, many disputes that once required formal court action can now be resolved in a faster, more affordable forum which is great news. The increased financial jurisdiction is expected to benefit our community – from small businesses, tradespeople, horticulturists, farmers and individuals, who may be stretched taking a disputed claim to the District Court. Or where the cost of going to the District Court would be more than the amount claimed.
The Disputes Tribunal application process has not changed. Applicants continue to be able to submit claims using the existing processes (online or paper) available at disputestribunal.govt.nz/how-to-make-a-claim/
Lawyers generally do not appear at Disputes Tribunal Hearings. We can however assist by reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of your claim, preparing detailed submissions and presenting a clear, well-structured argument to ensure your case is understood and considered in the best light by the Disputes Tribunal. This can help to avoid costly errors and gives your case the best chances of success.
