New Fast-Track Approval Act – What It Means for Us

It means big news! In December 2024, the Government launched the Fast-Track Approvals Act 2024 (the Act), designed to cut through the red tape and speed up the consenting process of infrastructure and major developments that benefit regional and national growth.

How does it work?

The Act allows Government Ministers to greenlight projects directly, facilitated by the Environmental Protection Authority and a special Panel, as opposed to lengthier approval processes under alternative legislation (ie the Resource Management Act). Included within the Act are 149 listed projects, that were recommended for inclusion by an independent advisory group and agreed to by Cabinet (listed projects) –a list of projects already eligible for the fast-track process. So the owners are now able to lodge substantive applications for their projects for consideration.

What does this mean for our area?

Included in the listed projects, are projects in our area, such as:

  1. Bendigo-Ophir Gold Project
The proposed Santana Minerals mining venture in Bendigo to establish, operate and remediate an open pit gold mine at Bendigo and Ardgour Stations approximately 20km north of Cromwell.
  2. Gibbston Village
Located at Gibbston Valley, the multi-use project envisions approximately 900 homes, a commercial precinct, amenity spaces and potential for a school with capacity for 350 students.

It is no secret that Cromwell is growing – fast. Everyone wants a slice of our paradise! As developments and other projects can now progress with increasing pace, the Act introduces both exciting opportunities and potential challenges for our region. The benefits being faster project approvals results in quicker economic growth and increased efficiency. The risks include the potential for environmental damage and less public participation in decision-making.
